LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – West Chester University senior Alexandra Santoro was named the PSAC women’s tennis athlete of the week it was announced by that organization Monday afternoon.
Santoro is the Golden Rams’ first conference athlete of the week winner this spring and the first player from West Chester to be so honored since current teammate Ali Fetter in April 2011.
Santoro went a combined 7-1 in singles and doubles competition last week, including a 2-1 mark in PSAC East play. WCU's win over Bloomsburg marked the first time since at least the turn of the century that the Golden Rams defeated Bloomsburg. Santoro's win at third singles against ESU also was the match-clincher for the Rams. She won all four of her singles matches last week in straight sets.
Santoro defeated Alyssa Liples of Bloomsburg, 6-1, 6-2 in the historic win over the Huskies. Her win over Rachel Grula at third singles against Kutztown was part of a monumental comeback as WCU dropped all three doubles matches and the first singles match to fall behind, 4-0 in the match. WCU rallied to win second, third, fourth and fifth singles to tie things up a 4-4, before falling at sixth singles.
West Chester hosts non-league rival Philadelphia University on Thursday in its next action.
