Considered by many as one of the best baseball players to step on the diamond at West Chester University during his era, Barry Houser compiled one of the best all-around statistical careers. In 1967, as a starting first baseman, he hit .400 for the season and was named to the second-team All-East team. However, it was in 1968 as a starting pitcher for the Golden Rams where he made an even greater impact on the record books. Howser finished the season with an 8-1 record, averaging 11 strikeouts per game. Against East Stroudsburg, he threw a one-hitter and struck out 18 batters. He gained wins over Villanova, Rider and Glassboro State and finished 18th nationally with an ERA under 2.00.
After graduation, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned to Gastonia of the Western Carolina League where he posted a 5-5 record in his first year of professional baseball. He made the Eastern League All-Star Team in 1970 and compiled a 20-13 record with the Waterbury Pirates during his time with that team. Houser retired from baseball in 1974 due to an injury and dedicated his life to teaching and administration where he has enjoyed a long and successful career.
