One merely has to glance down a page of Carol Brown Clay's sports vita to recognize the dominance that she held over women's swimminng as an athlete and coach. As an intercollegiate athlete, Carol was a member of the undefeated swimming team four years and she personally went undefeated during her four years in dual meet competition. A two-time captain, Carol held national collegiate records in four events, and was named an All-American each year. A superb athlete, at West Chester Carol also played two years of varisty tennis. After Graduation, while completing her Master's of Education Degree at West Chester, Carol made here mark at Lower Merion High School as both a teacher and coach. In 1974, Carol not only took over the women's swimming team, but started and taught intercollegiate tennis at Clarion State College. In 1978, she became the first female coach in the history of the "Men's Pennsylvania State Conference Swimming" to coach a men's team. When the PSAC finally instituted a conference championship for women's swimming in 1976 (which she founded), Carol proceeded to guide her team to four straight championship titles. In 1977, Carol founded the AIAW Small College National Championships which her team won in '77 and '78.
Through retired from coaching and teaching, Carol is back in the athletic spotlight. She was ranked number one in the state of Florida in women's 45 tennis singles in 1993 and 1994 and nationally in both singles and doubles. Carol competes in mini triathlons, 10k races, and has rowed for the Vasper Boat Club of Philadelphia. Presently, Carol is owner and president of a silk screening and embroidery company.
