With a roster full of 17 freshmen and just four seniors, few saw what was coming from the 2002 West Chester University’s women’s lacrosse squad. Sporting one of the youngest, if not the youngest rosters in the country, West Chester tied a then-school record of 13 wins and captured its first NCAA Division II National Championship with an 11-6 victory over Stonehill in front of its home crowd. Head coach Ginny Martino, in her fifth year at the helm, molded that young group into national champions with wins over perennial national powers C.W. Post and Longwood University along the way.

West Chester's title was its first NCAA women's team championship. The Golden Rams defeated Bloomsburg in the PSAC Championship Game, before making their historic run through the NCAA Tournament. Kathleen Sheehan was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. She finished the championship game with four goals and an assist, and led all players with nine points on eight goals and an assist in the tournament. Sheehan was joined on the all-tournament team with Dulcie Royer, Shannon Eidse and co-captain Casey Bergeman,
