WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University's women's track & field team produced four first-place finishes in the squad's outdoor season opener at Farrell Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
A total of 29 Golden Rams athletes were placewinners in the first outdoor meet of the season. Nine of those placewinners were top three in their respective events.
Katie Butler won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches while Melinda Wentz won the 110m hurdles in a time of 16.11 seconds. Kamber Schrann cleared 10-6 in the pole vault, and Wentz won the long jump with a leap of 16-7 3/4.
West Chester placed four athletes in the top seven of the long jump, four more in the top six of the triple jump and four in the top five of the high jump. Sam Smarkola registered a pair of third-place showings in the 100m (13.01) and 200m (26.80).
Following behind Butler in the high jump was Brigid Harron and Wentz tied for third place (5-0 1/2), and Andrea Lengal in fifth (4-10 1/2). After Wentz' first-place showing in the long jump, Nicole Reaves was fourth (15-11 3/4), Aimee Sitch fifth (15-7 3/4) and Dana Dietrich seventh (15-4).
Brittany Foye and Miriam Hughes tied for third place in the triple jump with leaps of 34-11 1/4. Dietrich was fifth (34-9 1/2) and Reaves sixth (33-10 1/4).
Behind Wentz in the 110m hurdles was Butler in third place (16.38 seconds) and Brigid Gallagher in seventh (17.50).
Lyndsey Ratasiewicz was fourth in the 1500m (4:55.66) and fifth in the 3000m (10:58.14). Leigh Gumlock-Silfies finished fifth behind Ratasiewicz in the 1500m in a time of 4:59.09, and Jess Joseph finished behind Ratasiewicz in the 3000m with a time of 11:05.51.
Gumlock-Silfies was sixth in the 800m (2:27.12). Lyndsay Nygren was eighth (2:28.06). Melissa Gillen finished seventh in the 400m (1:04.13) and Shannon Murphy eighth (1:04.39).
