LOCK HAVEN, PA – West Chester University was well represented with five members of the 2025 All-PSAC Field Hockey Team it was announced Monday. The Golden Rams put two on the first team, two on the second team and one on third team.
Gianna Funari (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and
Veerle Hersman (Lisse, The Netherlands) were each first-team honorees while
Ella Shockley (Delmar, Del./Delmar) and
Caitlynn Szarko (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) earned second team plaudits, and
Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) received third team recognition.
For Funari, it was her third all-conference honor after being named third team All-PSAC in her first two years in college. Hersman is making her first appearance on the all-league squad. Shockley is also making her third appearance on the all-conference ledger. She was a second teamer last year and a third team member her freshman year. Szarko and Brown each earned their first All-PSAC citation.
Funari scored three goals and assisted on two others for a total of eight points this season for the Golden Rams. She notched one game-winning goal and recorded two defensive saves. The versatile asset for head coach
Amy Cohen played on all three lines at some point during the fall campaign. Traditionally a back on defense, Funari saw considerable time both in the midfield and up top at forward. She was implemented wherever Cohen needed her.
Hersman was one of the conference's leading scorers and such an electric offensive threat in the midfield. She has 16 goals, three assists for a total of 35 points. She finished the regular season tied for second in the PSAC in goals and led the conference in shots on goal. She was third in the league in points. Her 16 goals is currently tied for fifth in all of Division II.
Shockley anchored the Golden Rams' back line for the fourth consecutive year. She still managed two goals and two assists for a total of six points. She scored one game-winning goal, that coming in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament against IUP in double overtime. She also was credited with a defensive save.
Szarko stepped up with seven goals and six points for a total of 20 points on the year. She was asked to play a larger role in the offense with the graduation of West Chester's top three goal scorers from a year ago. Szarko turned in career highs in both goals and points as a result.
Sofia Brown enjoyed a stellar campaign in her second year as a starter in the Golden Rams' midfield. She finished with four goals and seven assists for 15 points on the year. She also was credited with three defensive saves on the year. Brown was an essential part of the Golden Rams' midfield, who could also lend support inside the team's own circle defensively.
