FLEMINGTON, N.J. - West Chester University scored a combined 30 runs on 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep over UMass-Lowell at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. Saturday.
West Chester (9-2) pounded out 14 hits in a 14-6 victory in game one while scorching the River Hawks for 16 runs on 10 hits in the nightcap of a 16-1 victory.
Kevin McGrath hit a grand slam and knocked in five runs in the opener. He finished 2-for-3 with three more RBI in the second game. Kyle Orensky and Nick Spisak also homered in West Chester's 14-6 win. Matt Baer registered three hits and one RBI.
Fred Breidenbach (3-0) picked up the win, tossing six innings of seven-hit ball. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five. Joe Opalka finished up, going three innings for his second save of the season. He allowed two hits and struck out two.
Eric Carmichael (2-1) registered the win in the nightcap. He threw five innings of two-hit ball and struck out six. Reserve catcher Brandon Wolfe finished up on the mound, throwing two innings, giving up two hits, one earned run and striking out three.
Baer hit his third career grand slam to lead the offensive onslaught. Charlie Kelly hit a two-run home run, and Bob Stumpo hit a solo shot. Both finished with three RBI.
West Chester and UMass-Lowell finish up a four-game weekend series at Diamond Nation Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
