Last-Second Goal Caps Furious Final Minute In West Chesters 3-2 Womens Soccer Win

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Brittany Yetter’s corner kick deflected off a Kutztown defender and into the back of the net with just one second left on the clock, lifting West Chester to a thrilling 3-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at South Campus’ soccer fields. The last-second heroics followed a Kutztown goal off a corner kick of its own just 25 seconds earlier.

The Golden Rams (4-1-1, 1-1-1 PSAC East), who dropped out of the national rankings for the first time this season, picked up their first win within the conference in dramatic fashion. Kutztown (3-3-1, 0-3-1) is still searching for its first league win.

In a furious final minute of play, the visiting Bears pressed the Golden Rams’ defense, eventually earning a corner kick with 30 seconds left. Diana Hopper’s volley from the corner landed in a mass of players with Kristen Kentner finally getting a foot on it and burying the loose ball into the back of the net.

With Kutztown in a frenzy feeling like it had just sent the game into overtime, West Chester quickly kicked the ball down the field on the restart and bounced a crossing attempt off a Bears’ defender and out of bounds with less than 10 ticks left.

Yetter grabbed the ball and sprinted to the corner to get the kick off before the buzzer. Her desperation kick ricocheted off a Kutztown defender and into the corner of the goal, enciting a mad dash onto the pitch by West Chester’s entire bench area while a stunned Kutztown squad looked on bewildered.

The two goals in the game’s final minute were the first tallies of the second half, ending nearly 52 minutes of scoreless score.

Sarah Oswald scored twice in the first half, helping West Chester come from behind and take a 2-1 lead into the break. Both of Oswald’s goals were the result of beautiful thru balls that sprung the freshman in on Kutztown’s goal uncontested. Oswald lifted the ball over a sprawling Stefanie Bonsky each time and tapped it into the open net.

Yetter fed Oswald for the game-tying goal 1:15 after Kutztown had opened the scoring off a corner kick that Hopper served up to Angela Corrado. Christine Thurwanger sent Oswald in for the go-ahead goal on a nice feed from 30 yards.

Bonsky finished with five saves on the day. West Chester’s Hilary Smart made three.

West Chester travels to Edinboro on Saturday for a non-league contest versus the PSAC West Fighting Scots.
