West Chester Athletics has secured a secondary insurance policy for athletic injuries, defined as an injury sustained while participating in a scheduled competition, practice, or travel to or from competition or practice.
Every student-athlete must have primary medical insurance coverage to participate in intercollegiate athletics at West Chester University. If the student-athlete does not have personal insurance, or, if the student-athlete is covered by Tricare or Medicaid (federal health insurance that is not considered primary) or is enrolled in a medical cost sharing program (not considered insurance) they can either purchase another policy or opt-out of the secondary insurance by filling out the exemption and release workflow in Teamworks. See your Athletic Trainer for details.
If a student-athlete is injured during practice or competition, he or she should immediately seek medical assistance from the Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) assigned to the team or come to the Athletic Training Room in Sturzebecker Health Science Center between the hours of 12pm and 6pm daily. Student-Athletes can also request an appointment at the Hollinger ATR via the
online scheduling link. The ATC can schedule an evaluation with the physician group on campus. If it is necessary to seek medical attention off-campus, the ATC will provide secondary insurance information to student-athletes to bring to the provider and file a claim.
A claim form should be completed for all injuries where off-campus care is necessary. The ATC or coach who was present at the time of injury or is assigned to the team will assist with this process.
