No. 9 West Chester Uses Long Ball To Down Mercyhurst, 3-2

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– The ninth-ranked West Chester Golden Rams scored on three breakaway’s set up by long passes out of the back to defeat pesky visitor Mercyhurst, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a non-league PSAC crossover women’s soccer match.

Sophomore forward Sarah Oswald scored on two of the three breakaways, including the game-winner in the 77th minute that took the wind out of the upset-minded Lakers’ hopes. Brittany Yetter opened the scoring when she converted on a breakaway just two minutes into the game.

Mercyhurst tied the game on a nice corner kick from Jamie Schroter, who bent the ball around the post and in directly off the kick. Oswald gave the hosts a 2-1 lead three minutes later that West Chester took into the halftime break.

Sarah Powell beat West Chester goalkeeper Brittany Barnes in the 65th minute to knot things up at 2-2. Twelve minutes later, Oswald crushed the Lakers’ aspirations with her second tally of the game and eighth of the season.

Barnes was credited with three saves in her first game action this season. Rebecca Heintzman made three saves for Mercyhurst. The team was also credited with a save.
