Sarah Oswald

Own Goal Lifts No. 3 West Chester Over Millersville

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– A ricochet off a corner kick hit a Millersville defender in the shoulder and deflected into the net in the first half, and No. 3 West Chester made that tally stand up en route to a 1-0 victory over the Marauders in a women’s soccer match under a blistering sun Wednesday afternoon.

With temperatures threatening the 90-degree threshold, West Chester (2-0, 1-0 PSAC East) forced the issue all day, finally benefitting from a fortunate bounce off a corner kick in the 19th minute of the game. Sophomore Sarah Oswald lofted the corner into the penalty area where Millersville goalkeeper Jamie Lancaster attempted to punch it away from the goal line.

Fortunately for the hosts, Lancaster’s attempt ricocheted off her fist and hit a defender on the near post and deflected into the back of the net.

The Golden Rams outshot the Marauders (1-1, 0-1) 13-5 and goalkeeper Hilary Smart was not called upon to make a save in the contest. West Chester controlled the tempo of the tilt, narrowly missing on a number of other opportunities. Oswald fired off six of the team’s 13 shots on the day.

West Chester, ranked as high as it has been since reaching the national semifinals two seasons ago, continues its PSAC East slate on Saturday with a trip to Mansfield to take on the Mountaineers at 1:30 p.m.
