ERIE, Pa. – Jessica Bennett converted a crossing pass from Melissa McKeary in the 43rd minute, and Lyndsie Bernardini notched her ninth shutout of the season in goal as No. 9 West Chester topped Gannon University, 1-0, in a PSAC Crossover women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (11-1-1), the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, increased its current unbeaten streak to 11 games while moving its winning streak to five straight. Gannon, ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region, falls to 6-5-1 on the year.
Bernardini (11-1-1) extended her consecutive scoreless string to 683 minutes with her shutout. Her nine blankings is second on the single-season charts at the school. Hilary Smart recorded 10 shutouts one year ago. Bernardini made three saves in the win.
Bennett scored her third goal of the season just before halftime, and West Chester’s smothering defense made that hold up. It was McKeary’s third assist of the season.
West Chester travels to Millersville next Friday night, Oct. 16 for a 7 p.m. tilt.
