SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – West Chester University split its season-opening softball doubleheader at Shepherd Tuesday afternoon, dropping game one, 4-1, before rebounding for a win in game two, 6-3.
Shepherd (3-1) scored two runs in the third and two more in the fifth of game one en route to the 4-1 victory. West Chester (1-1) potted one run in the top of the seventh, but could get no further in its comeback bid. In the nightcap, the Golden Rams scored two in the first, three in the fifth and one more in the seventh while senior Shannon Padula (1-0) held down the Rams’ bats.
Freshman Samantha Soprano (0-1) drew the start on opening day in game one, throwing a complete-game. She allowed three earned runs on five hits and walked five bats while striking out one.
Samantha Ingersoll went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI in the opener. Megan Harbaugh, Kate Kmiencinski and Erica Bechdel also picked up hits.
Padula picked up the 45th win of her career, allowing 10 hits but just three runs in the complete-game win. She walked one, struck out one and hit a batter.
Harbaugh and Erin MacNamee each went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the nightcap. Both of Harbaugh’s hits were doubles. Stef Kerbacher went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Ingersoll registered a two-run single in the top of the first to get the Golden Rams going early.
Shepherd got one back in the third. But, a three-run fifth put West Chester in command late. Harbaugh had a RBI double and MacNamee a RBI single to spark the rally. The other run scored on a wild pitch.
Kelsey Rapp hit a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh to extend West Chester’s lead to 6-2. Shepherd picked up one run in its final at bats, but it was not enough.
West Chester is off until Sunday when it takes on Grand Valley State (Mich.) in Claremont, Fla. as part of its spring trip south.
