WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Erin MacNamee went a combined 4-for-5, and freshman hurler Samantha Soprano threw a five-inning no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader, as host West Chester University earned a pair of 8-0 wins over visiting Mercy College in a non-league encounter Friday afternoon.
MacNamee went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple in game one, and Samantha Ingersoll hit a bases loaded double that cleared the bases in the second inning, staking the hosts to a 6-0 advantage. Evelyn Anderson was 2-for-2 with two runs scored as the Golden Rams opened up a 7-0 lead after three innings.
West Chester (11-5) has shutout each of its last two opponents, sweeping doubleheaders, and not playing more than five innings on any occasion.
Senior left-hander Shannon Padula (6-2) allowed three hits over five innings to pick up the shutout. She struck out two and is now two strikeouts shy of the all-time school record with 319 k’s to her credit.
In the nightcap, Soprano (4-3) threw her first career no-hitter, allowing one walk and one batter to reach on an error, while facing just two batters over the minimum for the win. Soprano struck out three.
Ingersoll was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI in the second game. Anderson went 2-for-2 with two runs scored again, this time adding an RBI to her line score. She finished the day 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
Megan Harbaugh hit a two-run home run in the first inning of game two.
West Chester hosts Holy Family in a non-league doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
