West Chester Softball Sweeps Twinbill From Holy Family

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Evelyn Anderson went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and two singles in the first game, and Samantha Ingersoll went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in the second game to lead West Chester University to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Holy Family on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, West Chester (13-5) increased its winning streak to six straight and has now won seven of its last eight contests.

Ingersoll lined a shot up the middle that ricocheted off of Holy Family starting pitcher Jody Searfoss (2-5) and into center field, scoring Anderson with the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Searfoss left the game after sustaining an injury to her right arm on the play, and Angela DiBeneditto came on to finish up. The Golden Rams took a 4-2 lead in the frame and held on from there.

Holy Family (4-10) got one run back in the top of the sixth when Vicki Grayson doubled home a run, but West Chester lefty Shannon Padula (7-2) shut down the Tigers to pick up her 51st career win. Padula struck out one batter for her 320th career strikeout. She now stands one behind former teammate Adina DeHainut for the school record.

West Chester scored two runs in the bottom of the first to jump out in front early. Erin MacNamee led off the game with a walk, and Anderson followed with a triple to left field that scored MacNamee. Anderson later scored on a wild pitch.

Holy Family tied it with a pair of single runs in the second and third, respectively. However, the Golden Rams went back on top in the bottom of the third when Meghan Halberstadt walked with the bases loaded.

Padula allowed three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and didn’t walk anybody. She induced 15 groundouts in her complete-game performance.

In the nightcap, Samantha Soprano (6-3) picked up her third straight win inside the circle. The freshman hurler, coming off a no-hit performance Friday, allowed one run on five hits and struck out four against just two walks in a complete-game effort. A first-inning home run to the second batter of the game was the only tally the Tigers managed in game two.

West Chester got that run back in the bottom half of the inning, and then tacked on a pair of runs each in the third and fourth. Ingersoll doubled home MacNamee in both the first and third innings to put the Rams up 2-1. Megan Harbaugh then followed with an RBI single up the middle in the third to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage after three.

Ingersoll stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth and hit a towering shot to left center that was caught on the warning track, inches from the fence. The sacrifice fly was Ingersoll’s 29th RBI on the young season. Harbaugh then hit a ball in the hole at shortstop, beating the throw to first base, allowing MacNamee to score the Rams’ fifth run of the game.

MacNamee saw her eight-game hitting streak come to an end in game two of the doubleheader. However, she scored three runs after walking in all four plate appearances.

Rebecca Costa (0-2) started game two and suffered the loss for Holy Family. She lasted four innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking four. DiBeneditto pitched two hitless innings in relief, walking two and striking out three.

Sarah Marsteller hit a home run in game two for Holy Family, and Searfoss was 2-for-2. Marsteller and Grayson were each 2-for-3 in the opener. Grayson had two RBI.
