BOWIE, Md. – West Chester University split its non-league softball doubleheader at Bowie State on Tuesday, losing game one 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, before rebounding to take game two a score of 7-4.
Shannon Padula (8-3) suffered the loss in the opener when a bloop single over second base with one out in the seventh and the bases loaded scored the winning run. Padula allowed four runs, three of them earned, on 11 hits while walking three and striking out two.
Erin MacNamee was 2-for-2 in the loss and Meghan Halberstadt went 2-for-3. Katie Kmiencinski was 3-for-4 with a RBI.
In the nightcap, Halberstadt’s two-out, RBI single in the top of the fourth broke a 3-3 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit. West Chester (16-6) tacked on two more in the fifth for insurance. But, starter Samantha Soprano (8-3) improved her personal win streak to five with the decision. She threw a complete game, scattering 10 hits over seven innings and allowing four runs while walking three and striking out two.
Megan Harbaugh and Brandi Woolfrey hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the fifth inning for the Golden Rams. MacNamee later had an RBI groundout before Evelyn Anderson responded with a two-out RBI single to push the visitor’s lead to 7-4.
All nine batters in West Chester’s order registered a hit in game two. Samantha Ingersoll was 3-for-4 with a RBI. Kmiencinski continued to swing the hot stick, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
West Chester returns home Saturday for its PSAC East opener against East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m.
