ERIE, Pa. – Shannon Padula registered two wins on the afternoon, pitching a complete-game shutout in the opener, leading visiting West Chester to a doubleheader sweep over Mercyhurst by scores of 3-0 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (26-16) has now won five of its last six as the Golden Rams begin to heat up for the final two weeks of the regular season. Mercyhurst (13-20) dropped its fifth and sixth straight, losing both ends of a doubleheader for the third time in as many days Saturday.
The Golden Rams plated three runs in the top of the fourth that increased the visitor’s lead to 5-1. Sam Ingersoll led off the frame with a double, followed by a Kristin McCoy walk. Kelsey Rapp then moved the runners over on a ground out, before Stef Kerbacher hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ingersoll. Erin MacNamee and Evelyn Anderson then hit back-to-back RBI doubles.
McCoy hit a run-scoring single in the fifth that pushed the lead to 6-1. After Mercyhurst got that one back in the bottom of the fifth, Kate Kmiencinski hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season in the seventh to make the score 7-2. The Lakers scored twice in their final at bats, but could not draw any closer.
Padula (15-9) yielded four runs on 10 hits in the win. She walked two and struck out one. In the opener, the lefty scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out three without walking anyone to record the shutout.
West Chester scored single runs in the second, third and seventh to pick up the win in support of Padula. MacNamee hit an RBI single in the second, Ingersoll and RBI double in the third and Kmiencinski a sacrifice fly in the seventh just for insurance.
Ingersoll finished the opener 3-for-4 with the RBI. She was 2-for-4 in the nightcap. MacNamee finished the twinbill 4-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored. She was 3-for-4 in the second game with three doubles. Kmiencinski was 2-for-4 in the second tilt with the home run.
West Chester travels to Lincoln University on Tuesday for the makeup of a doubleheader that was rained out earlier in the year.
