WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Sixth-ranked Lock Haven took both games of a non-league doubleheader this afternoon against host West Chester on a windy and cold Saturday afternoon on the softball diamond.
West Chester (21-13) witnessed its current losing streak grow to six games with the two setbacks. Lock Haven (27-4) increased its winning streak to 19 straight with its 10th consecutive doubleheader sweep of the year.
The Golden Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in game two of the twinbill. However, the Bald Eagles scored six unanswered runs, including two in the top of the sixth inning, to salt away the tilt. Lock Haven All-America pitcher Kristin Erb (26-3) picked up both decisions inside the circle to run her NCAA DII record for wins to 144 in her career.
Samantha Ingersoll hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third to stake West Chester to a 2-0 lead. However, Lock Haven came right back in the top of the fourth when Brittany Muthard hit a three-run homer to left-center that put the visitors back on top for good.
Samantha Soprano (9-6) pitched a complete-game for the Golden Rams, suffering the loss. She surrendered six runs on 10 hits, walked eight and struck out three. Evelyn Anderson went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
Erb allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings. She struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. Erb pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener while walking one and striking out 11.
Lock Haven got a solo shot in the second inning from Muthard and then scored an unearned run in the third when West Chester committed two errors in the field. That was enough to make a 2-0 winner out of Erb.
Ingersoll finished 2-for-3 in the opener for the Golden Rams.
West Chester will host Shippensburg Sunday afternoon in a PSAC East softball doubleheader.
