No. 5 West Chester Shuts Out Philadelphia U, 3-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Fifth-ranked West Chester received goals from three different players in the first half en route to a 3-0 shutout over visiting Philadelphia University on a calm and warm Tuesday evening at John A. Farrell Stadium on Senior Night for the Golden Rams.

West Chester (15-1) improved its winning streak to a season-high eight games while sophomore goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini picked up her 28th career shutout with the blanking of Philadelphia (9-5-3).

Bernardini’s 28 career shutouts ranks second all-time at West Chester – just one behind leader Hilary Smart (2005-08). Bernardini went the distance for the Rams recording three saves.

Sarah Oswald opened the scoring in the second minute of the game when she kicked the ball by Rams goalkeeper Kelli Kowalewski 1:16 into the contest. Kim Shoup notched her second of the season when she blasted a loose ball rolling toward the goal into an empty net in the 33rd minute. Kowalewski came out of the net to play a ball on the right-hand side of the penalty area. However, West Chester’s Maddie Mitchell beat the keeper to the ball and poked a pass over to Shoup, who was all alone.

Jessica Bennett made it a three-goal lead for the hosts with 15 seconds to play in the half. Bennett’s goal concluded the scoring in the game.

West Chester visits PSAC conference opponent Millersville Saturday at 5 p.m. in its regular-season finale. A win or a tie over the Marauders would clinch the school’s sixth straight regular-season championship.

West Chester will play at home in the first round of the PSAC tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. on the South Campus soccer field against an opponent yet to be determined.
