MURFEESBURG, N.C. - Melissa Hastings registered a save in game one and picked up a win in game two as West Chester University swept a doubleheader from Chowan, 8-7 and 7-4, in a non-league softball match Friday afternoon.
West Chester (5-2) begins its spring trip 2-0 with the sweep, while Chowan falls to 3-13.
Hastings entered game one in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded, asked to protect an 8-4 advantage. All three inherited runners scored. However, she struck out Chowan's leadoff hitter, Megan Wade, with two outs and the bases still juiced to earn the save.
Erin MacNamee's two-run double in the top half of the seventh proved to be crucial to the Golden Rams' win. Brooke Muth (2-1) picked up the win inside the circle.
In the nightcap, Hastings tossed a three-hitter over six innings to silence Chowan's bats. Sam Ingersoll highlighted a three-run first with a two-run home run, her team-leading fourth of the year. Katie Kmiecinski hit a two-run single during a four-run fifth that helped the Rams ice the contest.
West Chester continues south to Clermont, Fla., for two games on Sunday against Assumption and American International College in the morning.
