CLERMONT, Fla. - West Chester University's softball squad defeated West Liberty, 12-4, Tuesday morning before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 6 Winona State at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Tuesday.
West Chester (10-3) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped against nationally ranked Winona State (8-0). However, Sam Soprano (4-0) picked up a win inside the circle in relief against West Liberty (0-6) as the Golden Rams went 1-1 on the day.
Missy Schwartz went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored while Evelyn Anderson was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to pace West Chester in the win over West Liberty. Megan Harbaugh and Katie Kmiecinski each drove in a pair of runs as well.
Soprano tossed 3.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit, to pick up her fourth win of the year inside the circle. She walked three and struck out one. Kate Skokowski started and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Only three of her runs were earned.
In the nightcap, Anderson scored on an RBI double by Sam Ingersoll in the bottom of the first inning to put West Chester in front early. Winona State tied it with a run in the fourth, before Samantha Hildebrandt hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth for the eventual game-winning hit.
The Golden Rams will be back in action on Thursday, after taking a day off on Wednesday, when they take on Wayne State (Neb.) and Grand Valley State.
