WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Visiting Shepherd University used a three-run seventh inning in game one and a five-run sixth inning in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep over the homestanding West Chester Golden Rams in the regular-season finale for the Rams Sunday.
West Chester (29-15) will host the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the South Campus softball field. Shepherd (32-10) still has one week left in its regular-season before entering the WVIAC Tournament.
Freshman hurler Devon Utterback (1-2) suffered the loss in game one. She pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out three. Brooke Muth came on to pitch the final two innings and allowed three runs on three hits.
West Chester trailed 3-1 entering the top of the seventh inning when Shepherd exploded for three runs to push the lead out of reach. Nichole Pitcock doubled in a run, and Amber Dudek hit a two-run homer for the visiting Rams.
West Chester scored its lone run of the game on a solo home run by Nicole Cruts, the first of her career, in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. The Rams could not muster much else off of left-hander Tricia Bettura (16-5). She tossed a complete-game, three-hitter and struck out five.
In the nightcap, Shepherd plated five runs in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and rode Pitcock’s arm to the win. This time it was Tiffany Farmer’s three-run shot that put the game out of reach. She greeted West Chester reliever Kate Skokowski with a blast to left-center after Muth (14-8) had allowed two runs to score without registering an out.
Muth lasted five innings, yielding four earned runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out two. Skokowski surrendered one earned run on two hits in two innings of wok.
Pitcock (13.5) tossed a complete-game, six-hitter. She allowed two runs, both of them unearned, walked three and struck out two.
