BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - West Chester University could muster just six hits in two losses at the hands of No. 16 California (Pa.) and No. 6 Bloomsburg in the PSAC softball tournament championship round Friday afternoon. Cal downed West Chester, 13-1, in five innings before Bloomsburg topped West Chester, 9-1, in six innings.
West Chester (32-18) was eliminated from the conference tournament with the pair of losses and must now wait until May 9 when the NCAA announces the Division II field for the 2010 NCAA softball championships. The Golden Rams were the seventh seed in the Atlantic Regional this week. Each regional is made up of eight teams.
Cal jumped on West Chester early in game one on the day, scoring five runs in the first inning and two more in the second. The Vulcans then posted six tallies in the fourth while the Golden Rams could manage just one run off Lauren Shaheen (19-4) on four hits.
Katie Kmiecinski doubled home Erin MacNamee in the second inning, making it a 5-1 ballgame, for West Chester's only run of the tilt. MacName singled with one out and stole second to get into scoring position for Kmiecinski.
Megan Harbaugh doubled and Sam Ingersoll singled for West Chester's only other hits.
Brooke Muth (16-10) started and lasted just 1.1 innings, yielding seven runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Only one of her seven runs allowed was earned as the Golden Rams committed three errors in the game.
Freshman Devon Utterback came on in relief and pitched 2.1 innings. She gave up six runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two. Melissa Hastings pitched one-third of an inning.
In the nightcap, MacNamee and Ingersoll were the only two Golden Rams to collect a hit. Bloomsburg scored five runs in the first, three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game.
Hastings (2-1) suffered the loss in the start. She lasted 1 inning, giving up five runs on four hits. Kate Skokowski relieved Hastings in the second and yielded three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Sam Soprano finished up with 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
West Chester scored its run in the third inning when MacNamee doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ingersoll brought her home on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1.
