WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Ashley Saylor scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute as host West Chester staved off a pesky Mercyhurst squad, 2-1, at South Campus Field on a rain-filled Friday afternoon.
The game was delayed an hour and 45 minutes by lightning in the area, and then Tara Malkiewicz provided the Golden Rams (9-2-3, 6-2-3 PSAC) with some quick-strike offense when she tallied in the ninth minute to put West Chester on top of Mercyhurst (5-7-1, 2-6-1).
Saylor finished up an assist from Melissa McKeary late in the second half to push the cushion to two. It was a good thing because the Lakers scored with 20 seconds left in the game to pull within one. However, it was just a little too little and a little too late.
Shannon Fedyk (9-2-3) made one save in goal for West Chester.
The Golden Rams take on Gannon tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
