West Chester Shuts Out IUP, 2-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
- Maddie Mitchell scored in the first half and Jen Hutchinson added another in the second half as host West Chester University shut out PSAC leader Indiana (Pa.), 2-0, on South Campus Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (8-2-3, 5-2-3 PSAC) picked up three critical points in the league standings, handing the conference leader IUP (8-2-2, 6-2-2) just its second loss in league play this fall. It marked the Golden Rams' first conference win over an opponent that was ahead of them in the standings and pushed the Rams right back into the thick of the race.

Mitchell got things started in the 39th minute when she broke in on IUP goalkeeper Mara Hricik and knocked in a rebound of her initial shot into the open net. It was her first goal of the season. Hutchinson then headed in a corner kick from Kim Shoup in the 47th minute to double the hosts' lead.

That would be all West Chester needed as the Golden Rams controlled play the entire game, limiting IUP to just seven shots in all and only one before halftime. West Chester held an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corners.

Shannon Fedyk (8-2-3) did not record a save. However, Noelle Harner headed a blast from Taylor Vladic over the crossbar midway through the second half to thwart the visitor's best opportunity of the afternoon.

Hricik made two saves in 68 minutes of play. She entered in the 22nd minute after starting keeper Kelly Brennan left with an ankle injury.

West Chester hosts Mercyhurst on Friday at South Campus Field.
