SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Fourth-ranked West Chester University travels to No. 2 Shippensburg University for the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Tournament Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and $1 for senior citizens and children.
Saturday’s contest is just the third career meeting between the two teams. Earlier this season, Shippensburg earned a 2-0 victory at West Chester. The only other meeting occurred back in 1983, when the Golden Rams downed the Red Raiders, 3-0, in Shippensburg.
West Chester (14-4) is making its first trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament since re-classifying from NCAA Division I in the offseason. The Golden Rams last made a national tournament appearance in 1987 while at the Division I level. WCU has four All-PSAC East First Team players – including forward Kayla Gluchowski (12 goals) and midfielder Leah Angstadt (eight assists). Senior forward Nicole Fiorilla was a second team all-league selection after leading the Golden Rams in scoring with 28 points and tying for the team lead in goals (12).
Shippensburg (17-3) will be making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament, all under head coach Bertie Landes. With the exception of the 2007 season, the Raiders have reached the national tournament every year since 2003.
The winner of Saturday's first round contest advances to the national semifinals to take on No. 1 and currently undefeated Bloomsburg on Friday, Nov. 11 in Bloomsburg, Pa. The other first round contest pits American International College against defending national champion UMass-Lowell on Saturday in Lowell, Mass. The winner of that tilt advances to the national semifinals in Bloomsburg and will play Merrimack, who received a bye to the semifinals.
