SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - West Chester University opened its PSAC East softball schedule, dropping a doubleheader at Shippensburg on Tuesday. The Golden Rams lost game one, 8-7, before falling in game two, 7-1.
West Chester (11-11, 0-2 PSAC East) succombed to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener, after tying the game at 7-all in the top half of the frame. Shippensburg (16-8, 2-0) scored three runs in the first two innings of the second game to jump out to an early lead.
The Golden Rams' Kate Kmiecinski hit a three-run home run in the opener to stake West Chester to a 3-0 lead in the first. Jessica Schuck hit a solo shot in the fourth, and Jillian Murray hit a two-run shot in the fifth.
Kim Murl (5-6) allowed five earned runs and struck out seven in 6.2 innings of work in the opener. Kate Skokowski (0-3) suffered the loss in the nightcap. Devon Utterback relieved Skokowski in the third inning and finished up for the Golden Rams.
Both Murray and Kmiecinski finished game one 2-for-3 with a home run. Erin MacNamee was 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
West Chester hosts East Stroudsburg on Friday in its next league action.
