WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Nicole Cruts and Kate Kmiecinski each hit a home run in the opener, and Devon Utterback threw a four-hitter in the nightcap to lead West Chester University to a softball doubleheader sweep over visiting Chowan Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (15-11) upped its winning streak to four games, sweeping its second doubleheader in as many days. Chowan (19-15) continues its northern swing at Bowie State tomorrow afternoon.

Cruts and Kmiecinski provided all the run support Kim Murl would need in the first game. Cruts led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot that broke a scoreless tie. Kmiecinski followed with her fourth homer of the year in the fifth inning to double the lead. Kmiecinski’s solo shot came with two outs in the inning.

Murl (7-6) pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out five and walking nobody. She faced just three batters over the minimum.

Back-to-back five-run frames in the second and third innings of game two earned West Chester a 10-2 win shortened to five innings. Megan Kelly went 2-for-2 with her second home run in as many days. She hit a solo shot in the second that followed two batters after Abby Block’s three-run blast.

Five of the first six batters in West Chester’s third inning reached, and Kelly then singled in a pair of runs to highlight the rally.

Utterback allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out five. The complete-game win upped her record on the year to 8-2.
