KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Megan McCormick went 4-for-4, including two home runs and a double, and knocked in five runs, and Erin Holloway struck out eight batters to lead No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) to its first PSAC softball championship in school history with a 7-2 victory over West Chester Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field.
West Chester (34-19) must now wait until Wednesday to learn its fate for the NCAA Division II Women's Softball Tournament. The Golden Rams were ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region in last week's poll. The NCAA will take the top eight teams for its regional tournament.
Katie Kmiecinski went 2-for-3 with both of West Chester's RBI while Erin MacNamee was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Holloway (22-3) kept the Rams hitters off balance all afternoon, scattering seven hits in the complete-game win. Devon Utterback (17-6) started for West Chester and lasted 3 2/3 innings, yielding six runs, five of them earned, on nine hits and walking one and striking out five. Kim Murl came on in relief and went the rest of the way. She allowed one run on five hits.
IUP scored in each of the first four innings to run out to a 6-1 lead. The Crimson Hawks then scored again in the top of the sixth, but gave that run right back to West Chester in the bottom half.
Saturday's conference championship game marked the first appearance by a Golden Rams squad in the title game.
