EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – West Chester used a three-run sixth inning to pull out a win in the nightcap and salvage a split of a PSAC East softball doubleheader at Zimbar Field against homestanding East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
West Chester (24-16, 6-6 PSAC East) sits in third place in the league standings with four games left against conference opponents. East Stroudsburg (12-17, 3-7) fell three games back of the Golden Rams in fourth place with the split. The Golden Rams captured the season series from the Warriors, three games to one, with the split as well.
Abby Block continued her hot streak in the twinbill, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI in game two. She was 5-for-5 overall in the doubleheader with three RBI. She contributed a RBI single during the Rams’ decisive three-run sixth in the nightcap. She smashed two doubles in the opener as well.
Nicole Cruts and Kelly Anderson each had two hits in the second game. Kim Murl (11-7) picked up the win, tossing 4 1/3 innings while scattering eight hits and allowing just one run. Devon Utterback (1) came on in relief to finish up and earn her first save of the season.
Utterback (9-4) suffered the loss in the opener, lasting 4 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Murl came on in relief and went the rest of the way without yielding a hit.
West Chester opened with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Block hit a two-out, two-run double to lead the charge. However, East Stroudsburg scored once in the bottom of the first and then pushed across a pair in the fourth for all the runs the Warriors would need.
The Golden Rams are off until Tuesday when they host Lock Haven at home in a PSAC crossover doubleheader on South Campus.
