Second-Ranked West Chester Shuts Down Lock Haven, 1-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Melissa McKeary scored in the 53rd minute, and that was all the Golden Rams stellar defense needed as No. 2 West Chester University cruised to a 1-0 victory over visiting Lock Haven inside Farrell Stadium Wednesday evening.

West Chester (3-0-0, 1-0-0 PSAC) opened defense of its conference crown in dominating fashion. Lock Haven (0-2-0, 0-1-0) played with a defensive posture for much of the game, resulting in a 16-3 advantage for WCU in shots.

McKeary scored her second goal of the year breaking in all alone down the right side after collecting a pass from Jen Hutchinson. “Hutch” boomed a 40-yard pass that McKeary ran onto and walked in alone on Lady Eagles’ goalkeeper Haley Zinn.

Golden Rams’ freshman goalkeeper Shannon Fedyk made a beautiful punch save over the crossbar on a long blast from midfield by Lock Haven’s Courtney Najmola with about two minutes to go to preserve her third consecutive shutout. Najmola tried to catch Fedyk off her line, but the athletic keeper was able to reach back and punch the floater over the crossbar at the last minute.

Fedyk made three saves on the evening while Zinn was credited with 11.

West Chester travels to No. 22 Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The game has been moved up to approximately 1:15 p.m. and moved into the football stadium due to the rain that has soaked Pennsylvania this week. The women’s game will begin 30 minutes after the men’s game concludes Saturday. The men are set to begin at 11 a.m.
