WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University’s women’s swimming & diving teams dropped a non-league meet to visiting University of Pennsylvania Friday, 163-134, in the final home meet of the 2011-12 regular-season inside Graham Natatorium.
West Chester (5-2) performed well in its final tune-up before the PSAC Championships next month, taking first place in five events. The Golden Rams also honored their two seniors, Leah Varvaro and Christie Stern, before the meet.
Amelia Buckley was a double-winner, claiming first place in both the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. West Chester took the top three spots in the 200 IM overall. Buckley touched the wall in 2:12.63 in the 200 IM while Mackey McGeary and Dani Dougherty placed second and third, respectively, with times of 2:17.16 and 2:18.58. Buckley’s time of 2:26.40 in the 200 breaststroke was also good for first place.
Varvaro claimed first in the 100 butterfly in her final regular-season home meet with a time of 59.33 seconds. Fellow senior, Stern, was part of the 200 free relay team that also placed first with a time of 1:40.16. She teamed with Megan Winslow, Codyanne Murtaugh and Mia Barone. Winslow’s time in leading off the 200 free was one of her best 50-free times in her career.
Off the diving boards, junior Michelle Murphy won the 3-meter springboard competition while placing second in the 1m event. Murphy scored a 284.85 in the 3m victory while posting a 256.20 in the 1m. Teammate Maggie Meade won the 1m event with a score of 277.35.
West Chester’s swimmers will be off until the conference championships, which begin on Feb. 16. The divers will be back in action on Feb. 4 at Delaware.
