WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University's top-ranked field hockey squad shut out visiting Kutztown, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field in a PSAC East contest.
West Chester (10-1, 5-0 PSAC East) ran its current winning streak to nine straight and remained unbeaten and in first place in the PSAC Eastern Division with the win over Kutztown (4-8, 1-4).
Sr., midfielder Michele Schrift scored a pair of second-half goals to lead West Chester offensively. The Golden Rams ran out to a 3-0 lead by halftime and never looked back.
Kelsi Lykens opened the scoring with a blast from the top of the circle following a penalty corner in the 12th minute. It was her ninth goal on the year. Ten minutes later, Kayla Gluhowski dribbled in from the right side and fired a laser past Kutztown goalkeeper Karly Waltman to make it 2-0. Courtney Wolff than potted her first goal of the season, deflectiing a pass from Gluhowski past Waltman on the doorstep in the 28th minute.
Schrifted notched her team-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season late in the contest.
Kristin Arnold (10-1) made two saves in the cage for West Chester. Waltman was credited with 15 saves for the Golden Bears. Kayla Denlinger relieved Waltman for the final three minutes of the match.
West Chester returns to Vonnie Gros Field Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. showdown with No. 5 Bloomsburg. The Golden Rams topped the Huskies up in Bloomsburg, 2-1, on Sept. 11. A win on Saturday would most likely sew up the Eastern Division title for the Rams.
