MURFREESBORO, N.C. - West Chester University's softball squad opened the 2012 season in style with a non-league sweep on the road over Chowan Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams won by scores of 5-2 and 6-1.
West Chester (2-0) will head home as Sunday's doubleheader at Barton has already been cancelled.
Charlotte Conaway went 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored in her West Chester debut in game one. Kelly Anderson went 2-for-4 in the opener and Nicole Cruts was 2-for-3. Conaway's RBI single in the top of the sixth scored pinch-runner Ashley Ford and put the Rams on top, 3-2. West Chester added another pair of runs in the seventh for insurance when Melissa Spinosa scored on a wild pitch, and Cruts singled home Ali Vavala.
Devon Utterback (1-0) picked up the win inside the circle. She threw a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
In the nightcap, Kim Murl (1-0) got the win inside the circle. She tossd a complete game as well, allowing just one unearned run on four hits. She walked one.
Conaway finished with a pair of RBI while Cruts, Jessica Russ and Jess Schuck were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Anderson and J.P. Norris were each 2-for-4.
West Chester broke open the game with a four-run second.
