WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester's Devon Utterback tossed a two-hitter in the opener, but Millersville's Sarah Bertoni one-hit the Rams in the nightcap as the two teams split their softball doubleheader on a beautiful Friday afternoon.
West Chester (16-11, 1-1 PSAC East) ended Millersville's four-game win streak in the opener with a 2-1 victory. However, Millersville (8-14, 1-1) stopped the Golden Rams' three-game win streak in the second game, 3-0.
Utterback (8-4) ran her personal winning streak to four games, allowing just four Marauders to reach base. Alicia Hughes hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning for the only blemish to Utterback's masterful opener. Hughes hit a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field fence to put Millersville on top, 1-0.
The Golden Rams answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth as Megan Kelly and J.P. Norris hit back-to-back triples down the right field line into the corner to lead off the frame. Charlotte Conaway then singled home Norris for the eventual game-winner.
Utterback struck out one and hit two batters. Hughes (2-6) suffered the loss for Millersville, scattering four hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five.
The Marauders' Bertoni was untouchable in the nightcap. Kelly lined a single over the shortstop's head in the fifth inning to break up Bertoni's no-hit bid. Conaway walked and reached on an error while Kelly Anderson walked. They were the only other base runners for the Golden Rams.
Kate Skokowski (3-2) started the game and took the loss inside the circle. She surrendered three runs, only one of them earned, on five hits over five innings of work. Utterback finished up with two hitless innings.
Millersville scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Gabbie Berry hit a RBI double to left and later scored on a ground out. She then hit a home run down the left field line in the third to put the Marauders on top, 3-0.
