Lincoln University, Pa. – West Chester’s eight-run fifth propelled the visitors to a win in the opener, and a big first inning in the nightcap completed the non-league softball sweep over host Lincoln University Wednesday afternoon at Oxford Complex.
West Chester (18-13) witnessed an awakening of its bats against winless Lincoln (0-14). The Golden Rams banged out 12 hits in the opener and another 18 in the closer while getting production from everybody in the lineup.
West Chester shortened game one to five innings with an eight-run fifth in an 11-0 shutout over the Lions. The Golden Rams then scored a season-high 13 runs in the top of the first inning of game two en route to a season-best 21 runs in the nightcap.
Melissa Spinosa hit a grand slam, marking the freshman’s first college home run, Charlotte Conaway hit a three-run shot and Jess Schuck had a three-run double as the Golden Rams batted around twice during the disasterous first frame of game one. Sam Rayhon hit a two-run homer in the second, and Kim Begley hit a solo shot in the fourth as well.
West Chester sent 26 batters to the plate in the first two innings to take a 17-0 lead.
Begley and Schuck were each 3-for-4 while Shuck and Spinosa each knocked in four runs.
Kim Murl (5-5) evened her record on the season with the shutout inside the circle in game two. She allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the second to the Lions’ cleanup hitter for Lincoln’s only baserunner of the nightcap.
Kate Skokowski (4-2) scattered four hits over five innings of work in the opener to get the win inside the circle.
West Chester hosts PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg on Friday at home for a league doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
