WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Samantha Derr tossed a two-hitter in the opener, and Katie Lynch hit a pair of home runs in the nightcap to lead fifth-ranked Kutztown to a PSAC East doubleheader sweep over host West Chester Friday afternoon by identical scores of 6-1.
West Chester (23-22, 4-8 PSAC East) dropped into last place in the conference standings while Kutztown (38-1, 10-0) remained unbeaten in league play on the season. The Golden Rams have a very important doubleheader coming up tomorrow against Shippensburg, if they want to climb back into the playoff picture.
Derr (21-0) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game one when Charlotte Conaway broke up the no-no and ruined the shutout with one swing of the bat. Her third home run of the season landed beyond the fence in left-center field. Kelly Anderson followed with a long drive to dead center field that hit the top of the fence. However, Anderson was stranded at second base.
Conaway’s homer made it 2-1 heading into the seventh inning. However, an error by the Golden Rams opened up a four-run inning for the Golden Bears, highlighted by the first of three home runs on the afternoon from Kutztown catcher Katie Lynch.
Lynch came back in the nightcap and belted two more home runs as the visitors completed the shutout.
Devon Utterback (11-11) pitched well in the opener for the Golden Rams. She scattered nine hits over seven innings. Only two of the six runs she allowed were earned. All four runs in the seventh were unearned. She walked two and struck out three.
Kutztown’s Tori Marcavage (5-0) surrendered one run on three hits over 4.2 innings in the nightcap. She picked up the win. Derr (1) came on to finish up and earn the save for the Golden Bears.
Erin Whitman hit a run-scoring single in the fifth inning for West Chester’s lone run. The Golden Rams trailed just 3-1 heading into the seventh when they gave up another big inning to blow the game wide open.
West Chester returns to action again Saturday afternoon for its final home doubleheader of the season. The Golden Rams welcome Shippensburg at 1 p.m. for a twinbill.
