WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Kelsi Lykens registered a hat trick and West Chester's defense bottled up All-America forward Carlee Dragon of LIU Post as the host Golden Rams breezed to a 6-0 shutout over the visiting Pioneers in a battle for first place in the PSAC Eastern Division Wednesday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (5-1, 2-0 PSAC East) moved into first place all alone while LIU Post (4-2, 1-1) suffered its first league loss of the year. Millersville, the third team tied for first place in the division, lost in overtime to Bloomsburg. The Golden Rams are now the only unbeaten team in the Eastern Division.
Lykens put West Chester on top early with a reverse sweep that snuck in short side on LIU Post goalkeeper Becca May, who was sliding to the front of the cage. Lykens dribbled the ball on a re-start from the right side up towards the top of the circle, before she abruptly stopped, flipped her stick around and whacked the ball along the turf into the cage.
Ten minutes later, Michele Schrift notched her fourth goal of the season when she tipped a blast from Lykens off a corner past May. Lykens then scored her second goal of the game when she lifted a shot off a penalty corner into the top right-hand corner of the goal while the teams played out the final corner opportunity of the half after time had expired.
Carley Buckwalter and Alexis Versak scored four minutes apart in the second half to run the lead to 5-0. Lykens then finished off her hat trick in the 63rd minute with a blast off a corner opportunity that hit the near post and riccoheted in.
LIU Post's All-American forward Carlee Dragon managed just one shot on cage in the game for the Pioneers, who were limited to just four shots in the contest.
West Chester goalkeeper Kristin Arnold notched four saves to pick up her ffith win of the year. The Rams outshot the Pioneers, 23-4, overall and held a 16-4 advantage on corners.
West Chester will host Millersville on Saturday at Vonnie Gros Field at 1 p.m.
