WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Carly Yost potted a goal 48 seconds before halftime, and Melissa McKeary added another in the second half to lead seventh-ranked West Chester University to a 2-1 victory over visiting 20th-ranked California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon on South Campus.
West Chester (8-0, 5-0 PSAC) remains unbeaten on the year and takes command of the PSAC standings with its second win over a nationally ranked opponent in as many weeks. Cal (5-2, 3-1) suffered its first league loss.
Yost popped a rainbow shot over the head of Cal's goalkeeper on a centering pass from Marie D'Angelo in the final minute of the first half to give host West Chester the lead. McKeary then hammered home her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the second half to double the hosts' lead. From there, it seemed the hosts would close out their visitors.
However, Cal stormed back with a goal late in the contest. However, they could not get the equalizer. The Vulcans’ first goal marked just the second time all year that West Chester allowed a goal. Nobody has scored twice on the Golden Rams in the same game.
Though, Cal threatened on numerous occasions down the stretch. West Chester’s defense was up to the task, and goalkeeper Shannon Fedyk came up big in the waning moments. Fedyk made eight saves, including a sliding tackle on a Vulcan attempt with 29 seconds left in the game, to preserve the win.
West Chester will be back in action next weekend when the Golden Rams travel to Erie, Pa., to take on Mercyhurst and Gannon in a pair of PSAC matchups.
