INDIANA, Pa. - Three different Golden Rams found the back of the net as No. 22 West Chester University's women's soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 victory over host Indiana, Pa., on Tuesday afternoon in the conference opener for both schools.
West Chester (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) got goals from Melissa McKeary, Ashley Saylor and Carly Yost to spark the offensive charge. Saylor's header off the foot of Diana Rowan put the Golden Rams up for good, 2-1, in the 16th minute. Three of the four goals in the contest came in the game's opening 16 minutes. Only Yost's goal in the 54th minute came after halftime.
McKeary put the visitors on top early with her third tally of the season in the sixth minute. However, IUP responded with a goal from Sharee McCarty in the 13th minute. Saylor's header was her team-leading fourth in West Chester's first three games and proved to be the game-winner.
"It was a great win for us today," head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley stated. "We didn't play our best. But, we fought through it.
"(IUP) comes right at you. You never feel comfortable with a lead against them because they have the ability to score a bunch of goals. I just felt that we made some very good decisions in front of the goal today."
Yost notched her second of the year off a corner kick from Cara Deola.
Shannon Fedyk (3-0) made three saves, going the distance in goal, for the win. West Chester outshot IUP, 13-7, including an 8-2 margin in the first half during the early scoring spree. When things settled down, the Golden Rams were able to paly its brand of soccer and stiffened defensively.
West Chester begins a three-game homestand on Saturday against non-conference foe Wheeling Jesuit at 11 a.m. on South Campus. It is part of a non-league doubleheader with the men's team, which plays Wheeling Jesuit right after the women at 1:30 p.m.
