WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Alexandra Lennon posted a double-double and came three blocked shots shy of a triple double as host West Chester ran away from visiting Cheyney in the second half of a PSAC East women’s basketball contest inside Hollinger Field House Wednesday night, 65-48.
West Chester (11-7, 8-6 PSAC) has now won three of its last four and 12 straight overall against cross-county rival Cheyney (1-16, 1-13).
Lennon scored a game-high 17 points, posted a season-best 15 rebounds and tied the school record for the third time in her career with seven blocked shots in the game. She did all of this while playing just 25 minutes. Eight of her 15 boards were off the offensive glass.
West Chester, which led 22-18 at halftime, shot 44.8 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and only turned the ball over six times – a stark contrast to the Rams’ 27.6 percent shooting and 11 turnovers in the first half.
West Chester pulled away from Cheyney with a 9-0 run over the first five minutes of the second half to opened up a 31-18 lead for the hosts. The Wolves got the deficit back down to six (35-27) with 12:29 left in the final period. However, the Rams answered with a 16-4 run that pushed the advantage back to 18 with just under seven minutes to go. Lennon powered that rally with seven points and a pair of blocks.
Cheyney narrowed the margin to 10 (51-41) with five minutes left, but that was as close as the Wolves would get the rest of the way.
Freshmen Jasmen Clark put up 10 points, representing the only other Golden Rams player in double figures on the night.
Ambreelinne Ortman, Brittany Sicinski, and Dallas Ely all threw up eight points. Sicinski also racked up six rebounds.
Cheyney was led by Tamara Russell’s 12 points and 11 rebounds while Kyra Hines-Allen added 11 points, and Destiny McFarlane grabbed 10 rebounds.
West Chester will back in action on Saturday against East Stroudsburg in a 2 p.m. tipoff with their PSAC Eastern Division rivals.
