CALIFORNIA, Pa. – No.6 California, Pa. scored six minutes into the contest and held off a series of West Chester corner kicks late in the second half to secure a 1-0 home victory in PSAC action Friday afternoon.
The Golden Rams (10-5. 9-5 PSAC) earned seven corners, four coming in the final 10 minutes, as they frantically tried to tie the game. The Vulcans (12-2-1, 12-1-0 PSAC), who have already clinched a PSAC playoff spot, won for the 12th consecutive outing.
Cal opened the scoring six minutes in when
Haley Henderson netted her seventh of the season with a shot into the upper left corner of the net with an assist from
Kelly Russo.
West Chester's best chance to equalize came with four minutes remaining when a
Rachel Jackson header was thwarted by a defender for a team save to keep the Vulcans in the lead.
The Vulcans were the aggressor taking seven of the first eight shots at goal in the game. West Chester did not register a shot until
Marie D'Angelo's attempt was stopped by
Meghan Jayes in the 17th minute. The next Golden Rams shot did not occur until the 36th minute.
Cal nearly added to its lead in the 62nd minute, but a shot by
Marissa Neifert hit the crossbar. The rebound was sent wide, and the Vulcans did not attempt a shot the rest of the game.
West Chester turned up the pressure in the final half hour, directing several shots at goal, but were unable to find the target.
Alex Srolis made two saves in the first half to keep the game close in goal for the Rams. Meghan Jayes made two saves in goal for Cal.
West Chester moves on to second-place Slippery Rock tomorrow for another important PSAC battle at 1 p.m.
