NEW HAVEN, Conn. – West Chester University women’s swimming & diving program opened the new year with an impressive tri-meet sweep over PSAC rival Shippensburg and host Southern Connecticut State University Friday and Saturday inside Hutchinson Natatorium.
West Chester defeated Shippensburg, 2221-118, while taking down So. Conn. State, 2237-121.
Kendall Somer won both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke as the Golden Rams extended their large lead from Friday on the final day of the meet. West Chester captured first place in six events on Saturday, after winning nine events Friday night. Kristina Ciatto was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.6.
For the meet, Somer won three individual events and was second in a fourth. She also won the 400 individual medley while finishing runner-up in the 500 free.
Kacie McNichol led two of her teammates to the wall in the 1650 free. She touched out in a winning time of 17 minutes, 49.53 seconds while Lauren Carastro was second in 18:08.71 and Dani Barron third in 18:31.33.
Emily Stang won the 200 free in 1:57.66 while Megan Winslow was a first-place finisher in the 200 backstroke (2:11.78).
Michelle Heineman won the 1-meter diving competition on Friday and followed up with a win in the 3-meter competition on Saturday. Heineman posted a score of 240.3 off the 1m board while registering a 236.47 on the 3m board.
Freshman Tess Hayward won the 100 free in her first college meet with a time of 54.27 while swimming the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay that started off the meet with a win.
West Chester returns to the pool on Oct. 25 for its home opener at Graham Natatorium – a tri-meet with PSAC rival Bloomsburg and Division I opponent Lehigh.
