SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The frustration continued for no.4 West Chester Friday afternoon. The Golden Rams were once again shutout by no.2 Millersville, falling 1-0 in overtime in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference field hockey semifinals in Shippensburg.
West Chester (14-5) will await the announcement on Monday of where it is headed in the NCAA Tournament. The two-time defending champions will probably have to hit the road in its quest for a third consecutive title.
Millersville score the winning goal in the 2:20 into overtime, when a shot by Sarah Bomberger deflected off a Golden Ram in front and deflected into the net.
The Marauders will face off against top ranked and undefeated Shippensburg Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the championship game.
West Chester who fell for a third time this season to Millersville outshot the Marauders 10-1 in the first half, and 6-0 in shots on goal, but were unable to put one into the net past Lauren Sotzin in goal for the Marauders.
The Golden Rams earned 13 penalty corners in the half, and did not surrender any.
Millersville evened play in the second half with each team taking three penalty corners, and West Chester holding a slight edge (5-4) in shots.
The Marauders placed three shots on goal, and
Audree Bonavita and the Rams defense was up to the task.
Bonavita finished the game with two saves, Soltzin made nine stops in goal for Millersville.
The Golden Rams will watch the NCAA election show on Monday to see where the road begins in the NCAA Tournament.
