CALIFORNIA, Pa. – No.7 California, Pa. scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over West Chester University, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship game Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The Golden Rams (13-7) and ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region will watch the NCAA selection show on Monday to see if its season will continue. California, Pa. (17-2-2) is the top ranked team in the region and captured the PSAC championship for the second time in the past four years. The Vulcans stretched its unbeaten streak to 18 games.
Cal keeper, Ashley Magruda, did not allow a goal in the tournament in winning the Most Valuable Player Award.
West Chester avenged two earlier losses in the tournament with victories over Kutztown and Gannon, but was unable to make it three in a row against the top team in the PSAC.
Chelsea Crocket opened the scoring in the 16
th minute off a feed from Marissa Neifert, chipping the ball over West Chester keeper Alex Srolis to give the Vulcans the 1-0 lead.
Cal widened the lead in the 30
th minute by heading in a corner to make it 2-0 lead.
At the half, West Chester had not attempted a shot at goal, while the Vulcans had sent seven toward the Golden Rams goal.
Trailing by two West Chester went on the attack early in the second;
Carly Yost, who scored in three previous games, hit the post in the 47
th minute.
Cal added a third goal in the 56
th minute.
The Golden Rams continued to storm the Vulcans net, but
Noelle Harner, and
Haley Mangiaruga both hit the post.
Srolis made two saves in goal for West Chester, Magruda was credited with four saves all coming in the second half.
