RALEIGH, N.C. - Jess Schuck hit a home run, and Ali Vavala collected three hits, to lead West Chester to an 8-3 victory over Concord at the Shaw Challenge at the Walnut Creek Complex Friday night.
West Chester (1-1) evened its record on the first day of the Shaw Challenge, bouncing back from a 6-1 loss to Shepherd earlier in the afternoon.
Vavala rapped out a career-high three hits from her third spot in the batting order and finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Schuck was 2-for-4 with a two-run shot in the fourth. The Golden Rams plated three in the first to take an early lead. However, Concord came back with three of its own in the top of the second. West Chester answered with three in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the icing on the cake.
The Rams loaded the bases in their first at bats, and Kelly Anderson and Jillian Murray each collected RBI singles. Megan Kelly scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by Concord's catcher. Vavala stole second, and the catcher's throw went into centerfield, allowing Kelly to walk home.
Schuck hit a two-run homer, her first of the year, in the fourth, after Vavala scored on an error by the third baseman.
Erin Quense hit an RBI single in the six while Melissa Espinoza had an RBI groundout to put West Chester in front, 8-3.
Skokowski (1-1) went the distance inside the circle. She allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out two.
West Chester will return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Bluefield College at 1 p.m. and Fairmont State at 3 p.m.
