RALEIGH, N.C. - Kim Begley went 3-for-4, and Kelly Anderson was 2-for-3 with one RBI, but Shepherd University came away with a 6-1 victory over West Chester in each team's opening game of the Shaw Challenge at Walnut Creek Complex Friday afternoon.
West Chester (0-1) fell behind 3-0 in its season opener heading into the bottom of the third inning. Anderson delivered an infield single that plated Megan Kelly, who had led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on a single by Begley. However, Begley and Anderson were stranded at second and third with no further damage.
Shepherd answered with a three-run fourth to double its run total and put the game out of reach.
Kate Skokowski (0-1) suffered the loss inside the circle. She started and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, four of them earned, on six hits. She walked two and struck out one. Devon Utterback relieved her and shutout the Rams the rest of the way, surrendering just one hit. She walked two and struck out four.
West Chester faces Concord at 5 p.m. in its second and final game on the first day of the Shaw Challenge.
