BOWIE, Md. – West Chester University swept a non-league softball doubleheader at Bowie State Saturday afternoon, earning a shutout in each contest. The Golden Rams took game one, 17-0, and finished up with a 23-0 victory in the nightcap.
West Chester (3-1) got a one-hit shutout from senior hurler Devon Utterback (1-0) in the first and a three-hit blanking from classmate Kate Skokowski (2-1) in the nightcap. Utterback registered eight strikeouts in the contest.
Kim Begley was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and a pair of runs scored in the opener. Jill Murray doubled in game one and homered in the second game to highlight West Chester’s effort.
The Golden Rams plated seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to make sure game one would end by the mercy rule. In game two, West Chester scored 14 runs in the second inning, batting around twice, sending 19 batters to the plate in the frame.
West Chester continues its weekend road trip with a doubleheader at Shepherd on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
