PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Kate Skokowski pitched a complete-game, three-hittter in the second game of a non-league doubleheader to lead visiting West Chester to a split of the two games.
West Chester (5-3) took the second game by the score of 15-3. However, Philadelphia University (1-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to eek out a 9-8 victory in the opener.
The Golden Rams plated 10 runs in the top of the third to take an 11-1 lead. Kelly Anderson knocked in four of those with a run-scoring single her first time up and a three-run home run her second time at bat in the frame. West Chester scored six of its 10 runs with two outs.
Skokowski (2-3) took it from there, throwing all five innings and allowing three runs on three hits while walking five and striking out three. She threw one wild pitch. West Chester battered three Rams pitchers for 15 hits. Renee Kakareka (1-1) started the game inside the circle and suffered the loss. She lasted 2.2 innings.
Ali Vavala went 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Kim Murl was also 3-for-3, but she registered four RBI, equaling Anderson’s total for the game. Katie Erb went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
In the opener, Phila U. scored three runs in its final at bats to come from behind. Meaghan Lewis led off the inning with a home run that chased Kim Murl. Kasia Smith later singled in the tying run, and the Rams scored its game-winner on an error shortly thereafter.
Skokowski suffered the loss in relief.
Anderson provided the big blow in the top half of the seventh to help stake West Chester to an 8-6 lead. Her single up the middle put the Golden Rams in front, 7-6, while Jill Murray added an RBI single later in the frame to open up an 8-6 advantage.
Kim Murl finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as well. Jess Schuck and Laura Altenburger each knocked in a run as well.
