CLERMONT, Fla. – Grand Valley State tossed a two-hitter against West Chester in a 4-1 win in the Golden Rams’ first game down south at the NTC Rebel Spring Games. Then, University of the Sciences came from behind to defeat WCU in the second game, 6-3, in Clermont, Fla., Thursday.
West Chester (5-5) mustered just an RBI from Jess Schuck in the opener. She knocked home Katie Erb in the bottom of the first that cut Grand Valley State’s lead in half, 2-1, after one inning. Grand Valley added a pair of runs in the third and that was all they needed.
Megan Kelly had WCU’s only other hit.
Kate Skokowski (3-4) started and threw 4.1 innings, allowing all four runs on four hits. She walked one and struck out five. Devon Utterback came on in relief and threw the final 2.2 innings. She surrendered three hits, walked one and struck out one, but did not give up a run.
In the nightcap, West Chester jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. An RBI single from Kim Murl and an RBI double from Erin Quense in the second were the big blows. Lauren Altenburger then had a run-scoring double in the fourth for the Golden Rams.
However, USciences scored once in the third, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at the time, then added two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to come from behind and take a 6-3 decision.
Devon Utterback (1-1) suffered the loss in relief, yielding five runs in two innings of work. Murl started and lasted three innings. She allowed one unearned run on three hits.
Kelly Anderson, Schuck and Altenburger were each 2-for-4 while Erin Quense went 2-for-3. Murl, Quense and Altenburger had the Golden Rams’ three RBI.
West Chester takes on Bloomfield at 1 p.m. tomorrow and Cedarville at 3 p.m.
